Do you know what fasteners are? A fastener is a hardware that is used to mechanically fix or join two objects together. Fasteners create non-permanent joints so that joined parts can be separated easily without damage. In the case of permanent joints, welding is used instead of using fasteners. The fastener is a very common and widely used tool in any industry whether commercial or for domestic purpose. Thus, they are available in different categories such as carbon steel fasteners, stainless steel, and alloy steel. These categories are further divided by the grade where each grade is used in either different or common purpose depending upon the type of application.
The common fastener used in most of the applications is a Copper Nickel 70/30 Fasteners. Such fastener is made of copper and nickel alloy that provides strength due to the presence of elements such as manganese and iron. These elements are responsible for adding strength to the fasteners.
Types and its uses:
There are different types of fasteners available which are used according to the purpose. Following are the different types:
- Anchor bolt
- Brass fastenerCaptive fastener
- Clevis fastener
- Snap fastener
- Threaded fastener
- Hook and loop fastener and more.
These were few of its types, many more are there. Every fastener is made of common materials used for manufacturing however in some cases plating or coatings is applied to enhance the corrosion resistance properties of the fasteners. Coating of chrome, zinc and other material may be applied to improve its characteristics and life.
However, before using the fasteners in any industry one should know the specifics so that proper material is used in the desired application. One should consider the following factors while choosing a fastener.
- Accessibility- the fastener of a particular material should be accessible and easily available in the market
- Environment- fastener should give better performance in any adverse atmospheric conditions such as high temperature and long water exposure.
- Installation process- they should be easy to use
- Reusability- the life period of fastener should be long so that they can reuse after the completion of applications.
- Materials to be joined- the two objects or parts being joined together should be kept in mind and according to them, the fastener should be selected.
The copper-nickel fastener is suitable and withstands all these factors thus they are used in many applications. The copper-nickel fastener is used in marine applications where resistance to corrosion caused by seawater is required. It is also used due to its excellent properties such as good fabricability and low macro fouling rates. Copper Nickel 90/10 Fasteners have high iron content that gives it resistance against impingement attack. They are also good at giving resistance against cracking. Such properties make it suitable to be used in adverse conditions. The increased copper content does not change the color of a fastener and it gives it silver look.
A copper-nickel fastener is used in various industries such as:
- mint industry
- desalination industry
- armaments industry
- marine engineering
- electrical industries
- chemical and petrochemical industries, etc.
